I don't know why, but for the past few days I've felt like I'm reliving high school.

It all started when I discovered Friday Night Lights on Netflix Instant Watch. I remember seeing a few episodes when it first came out, but I never really got into it. Well, I may be a little late, but I'm certainly on the bandwagon now. Every free second I've had has been spent watching Season One. I love all the sports talk. But let's be honest; there's no way those actors look like high schoolers (regardless of how cute they may be).

Then there was Friday night. NYU isn't known for their sports teams, but once a year all 17 schools compete for the title of All University Champ. I'm doing a package for NYU Tonight, so I spend six hours in sweaty Coles Sports Complex filming. I know most colleges actually have school spirit. There, students aren't afraid to wear gear from the bookstore or cheer on players, but at NYU it just seems so foreign. Don't get me wrong. I loved covering the event; it's just a little out of character for any New York City reporter.

I Must Resist!

Happy Fat Tuesday...oh wait, that was two days ago. But have no fear, for the season of Lent is here. Yesterday, you probably saw people with black crosses on their foreheads. Or like me, you may already be contemplating if you can really go 40 days without eating sweets. Why is it that whenever I make my way to a vending machine my favorite candy (Reese's) are there? The delicious duo of chocolate and peanut butter can usually never be found, but the moment I decide to take a hiatus, there they sit.

If she can rock it, why can't I?

Well, at least I still have coffee. With midterms underway, my daily number of cups has practically doubled. All these verb conjugations and conditional phrases are making my head spin. Again, I ask NYU why the language requirement?

Literally, I'm counting down the minutes until 9:15 tomorrow morning. Once I turn in my exam, I'll finally put on real pants again. Most of my Southern Facebook friends post "when will girls realize leggings aren't pants," but to them I say don't knock it until you try it. When you're scrunched up on a too tiny armchair with all your notes, the only thing on your mind is comfort. And I'm sorry, but no jeans (not even pajama jeans or jeggings) can top the stretchy fabric of leggings.

I’m excited to say today was my first shot at reporting for WNYU, the college radio station. For the rest of the semester, I’ll be giving a two-minute newscast each Sunday afternoon. My writeup consists of one world story, two national articles, and one local piece. After looking through Reuters, The New York Times, and ABC News, here’s what I think is most relevant news of 2/19/12.

Good afternoon. For WNYU News, I’m Ashley-Michelle Thublin. It’s 2pm and 44 degrees in Washington Square Park and here’s what’s happening.

Earlier today, a suicide car bomber killed 19 police officers and cadets in an attack outside a crowded Baghdad police academy. The attack breaks a short easing in pitting the Shi’ite Prime Minister against the Sunni-backed political block. Tensions rose Thursday, after a panel of judges detailed 150 attacks they say were carried out by death squads under the command of the Sunni Vice President. The attack is the deadliest since January 27th, when a suicide bomber set off an explosive-laden vehicle killing 31 and wounding 60.

Space junk falling out of the sky may seem likes something out of a science fiction film, but orbital liter has fallen twice within the last year. While the odds are tiny that anyone on Earth will actually be hit, the chances that it will interfere with working satellites are mounting. Last week, a top Swiss university announced that they are designing a sort of vacuum cleaner for the sky in hopes of combatting the problem. And, the US government said all new satellites will be accompanied by plans on how to safely bring them out of orbit.

White House officials are preparing for Republicans to use consumer angst about the raising cost of oil and gas to argue President Obama’s economic policies just aren’t working. Speaker of the House John Boehner instructed fellow Republicans to embrace the gas-pump anger when they return to their districts for the President’s Day recess. Economists say the current price of oil is only a modest drag on the economy. But Obama’s political advisers are bracing for battle as they envision rising gas prices throughout the summer.

New York City prosecutors are dropping criminal charges against many of the Occupy Wall Street protestors. Last October, police arrested 686 people on the Brooklyn Bridge. So far 174 cases have been dismissed outright, with 250 people agreeing to conditional dismissal. Many of the prosecutions were dropped under lack of evidence.

The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore

It's Saturday night. And while most of New York is out on the town, I'm stuck in Lafayette as the RA on Duty. But don't feel bad for me. During my weekly three hour Resource Center I was shown the most adorable short film ever. It combines a view of my favorite things: The Wizard of Oz, books, period piece clothing, and animation.

The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore is a humorous allegory about the power of stories. After a hurricane destroys his town, Morris is whisked away to a colorful old house filled with books. They come alive and help him spread the love of reading throughout his community. He remains their caretaker for years until it's time for him to pass and another book guardian takes over for him.

If you have 15 minutes to spare definitely check it out!

My First Week at The Times

Whew...this week has been a whirlwind of beauty products and sample sizes, for it was not only my first week at The New York Times but also Spring 2012 Fashion Week. Basically, every day was filled with complete craziness. While my boss was busy viewing the latest Marc Jacobs or Ralph Lauren collection, I was on the 6th floor of The Times building on 42nd Street and 6th Avenue.

Starting Monday I'll actually get to write for their blog (or so I've been told), but this week it was all about organizing the beauty closet. When I was first shown the closets-there's nine in total-they were literally nothing more than an endless supply of paper bags with designer logos decorating the outside. Tissue paper wrapped the precious products, but thanks to just the shear number of bags, it would have been impossible to quickly differentiate between anti-aging cream and sparkly nail polish. Well, three work days and 30 Rubbermaid containers later, I'm glad to say my task is complete.

One of the greatest perks of the massive cleanup was the fact that I got to keep anything that caught my eye. I bagged two Clinique lipsticks, some Dior powder, and crazy turquoise eyeliner from MAC.

I also got to transcribe an interview with this crazy new artist named Adel. It's a little funny. I come straight from my French class to work, so when I was asked if I could understand a Parisian accent, how could I not laugh? Half of his answers were said his French. I'm sure my professor will be happy to know I was actually able to comprehend and translate most of what he said.

Sure, it may not be sports writing or broadcast work, but I'm thinking I can get used to this kind of work. If only there were more hours in the day, I might actually get to have a life again. But, at least my day's are fun and filled with fabulous findings.

Happy Va-Lin-tine's Day!

My relationship status may say single on Facebook, but don't worry this posting won't be a woe-is-me article where I bash couples and card companies. Nope; instead I'm taking the time to talk about the Linsanity that's taken over Manhattan.

The New York Knicks are coming off a spectacular two weeks, having won their past five games. With their two biggest stars out head coach Mike D'Antoni had to rely on a patchwork lineup. But the absence of Carmelo Anthony and Amare Stoudemire has only enhanced point guard replacement, Jeremy Lin's, mystique as he went from being an anonymous bench warmer to the the Knick's leading scorer and playmaker. After playing just 54 minutes in the first six weeks, He's played 195 minutes over the last five games. His workload should ease with Stoudemire back on the lineup and Anthony returning later this week, but the Knicks will continue to lean heavily on Lin as their primary point guard. I guess will see if Lin can continue to impress as the Knicks take on the Toronto Raptors at 7pm tonight.

Because Sometimes You Just Need a Day to Yourself

Even though I should have spent the day reading about libel laws and examining court cases for my journalism ethics class, I decided to trade in my books for some fun. I finished my morning dose of French and picked up equipment for an upcoming shoot before officially declaring the day one just for me. After grabbing my usual skinny vanilla latte, I made my way to Astor Place to catch the next available uptown 6 train. My destination for the day took me all the way to the 77th and Lexington stop...The Metropolitan Museum of Art.

As a second grader I remember reading From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler. In the story, two children settle into the Met: blending in with school groups on tour, hiding at closing time in the bathroom, bathing in the fountain, and sleeping in antique beds. Basically, for any nerdy kid like me, it was the dream. So,when I moved to New York the Met was one of the first places I toured. But before today I hadn't actually been back.

Just as I remembered, the Ancient Egyptian art with its mummies and Temple of Dendur were quite impressive. Although, I did think it was a little funny how the shrine overlooks Central Park and all the hustle and bustle of the City.

Next, I looked around the Greek and Roman Art. It was just like being back in Rome. I'm sure one of their chipped statues resided in the Piazza della Signoria earlier in its life.

Then, it was off to the American Wing. Here, the main attraction for me was the period rooms. Furniture from the Revolutionary War right up to Frank Lloyd Wright decorated each room. It was like time traveling, except not as trippy.

I quickly ran through both the Medieval Art (I got enough of that last semester) and Armory.

I'm Obsessed with this Painting!

The exhibit I was most excited to see was wedged between them, Modern and Contemporary Art. Even though it's been two and a half years, I still remembered the whimsical paintings by Florine Stettheimer that welcome visitors when they first enter. Along with pieces from famous names like Pablo Picasso and Jackson Pollock, how could I not absolutely love it? There was also some awesome pop art from Andy Warhol featuring Jackie Kennedy, the most fabulous of the First Ladies, and a display of the top chairs from the 2000s.

As for the top floor, I'd already been at the museum for a couple of hours. I didn't think my senses could take another sculpture or painting, so I quickly looked at the photographs and left.

Because I'd resisted the urge to buy the museum's overpriced food even though my stomach was growling, I rewarded myself with a pretzel from a street vendor. Just like the characters from Gossip Girl, I enjoyed my meal from the steps of the Met.

A Few Things I Learned...
For me, it's a little bit weird to travel above 60 Street. I feel like a tourist in my own city, but today when I ventured so far uptown I noticed a few things about the people that call it home:
1) they pay a lot more for their street food-my pretzel cost $4
2) designer labels are featured in store windows, not second hand clothes
3) there's cooler crap to buy on the street
4) people walking on the street smoke cigars, not joints
5) they have way bigger dogs (maybe because they have a park so close) not just dachshunds

The Story of My Life

As much as I love the Eiffel Tower and Beauty and the Beast, let's face it, I'm absolutely 100% horrible at learning french. There's just something about the language that keeps me from grasping whatever it is I'm supposed to be saying. I've been to tutors, studied the textbook, and done online quizzes. Nonetheless, I feel like a complete idiot when it comes to class. I'm seriously hating NYU right now for making me take two semesters of this stuff, every morning at 8am might I add. My professor last year at least tried to make it fun, but I feel like this semester it's more about embarrassing those of us who struggle. This is only my third week back, and already I'm counting down the days until I can sell back my textbook, burn all my notes, and forever be done with French.

And another thing; I'm quite sure if I ever do make my way to Paris the last thing I'll need to know is where someone's great grandmother buys her shoes. Just teach me important phrases (like how much is the coffee), and I'll be set!

I'm sorry to be venting. But I just looked at the directions for an upcoming assignment, and I'm pretty sure I should just go ahead and count on another check minus.

But I shouldn't over exaggerate. There are a few good things about the class. Five or six people from last semester are in it with me. We reminisce about the good ol' days of French 1 and shoot each other confused looks when our professor says something way over our heads. Also, we watched this cool music video called "Alors on Danse" featuring Stromae.

You Only Have One 21st Birthday!

Even though I was supposed to have an 8am class yesterday morning, I was convinced to go out by six little words..."you only have one 21st birthday." And you know what, my friends were right. As the stroke of midnight hit on February 2nd, I was drinking a Long Island Ice Tea at Winnie's, this crazy karaoke bar conveniently located within walking distance to Lafayette. For only $1 a song, we sang the likes of everything from "I Want to Hold Your Hand" to "The Circle of Life."

But I wasn't the only one with a birthday, this guy named Luke was celebrating his 32nd. Some where in the night we sang a duet together; I'm just hoping my crazy renditions don't magically end up on YouTube. A few hours (and legal drinks) later, we stopped off at Whiskey Tavern for a pickleback shot before I went to bed. Right then, I made the executive decision that I'd be skipping French.

But surprisingly, I made it to my 9:30 class. After discussing Japan's Occupation following WWII for what seemed like years, a Kimmel burrito was what I was really craving.

Yummy Sundae

A pit stop at Lafayette for a quick nap, then I was off to Brooklyn for babysitting. Oliver greeted me with a big hug. Even his teacher wished me a Happy Birthday. We traded up our typical after school snack of toast and jam for two sundaes from Farmacy, a cute soda fountain shop in Carroll Gardens. After a speed round of homework and piano, we were off to Tae Kwon Do. Just as I was getting ready to leave around 6:15, my wonderful kiddos gave me an adorable homemade card, beautiful flowers, and delicious chocolates. I've heard some horror stories about babysitting children in NYC; I'm just so lucky to be with such a sweet family!

My CO-RA, Michael, and I met for cocktails at a swanky bar 14th Street before grabbing dinner from a dinning hall.

Way to Many Presents

I'd already done the whole it's my birthday craziness, so all I wanted was a nice quiet night in. This was the first birthday not spent with my mom, but she set aside special time so we could skype. Of course, she wanted to see me open up my 21 presents (I get one for every year old I am), and we talked about that days happenings.

I was all settled to crack open another Japanese text book when Michael called. He asked if I could come to his room for a quick second. When I opened up the door most of the Lafayette RAs were there, and a tier of homemade rainbow cupcakes sat on the table. It was the first surprise party of my life. Even though it felt super awkward when they sang "Happy Birthday," I was certainly shocked by their sweet gesture. I just love my RA staff!

My Wonderful Cake!

Throughout the day, my phone kept blowing up with facebook notifications. So many people wrote on my wall with well wishes. All I'm saying is I'm one lucky girl, and I certainly couldn't have asked for a better birthday!

Sweets, Sweets, and More Sweets

Because many residents of Lafayette are unfamiliar with our Chinatown neighborhood, I thought it would be a great idea to take residents on a tour of the area, pointing out some of the best local restaurants and grocery stores. Along with my fellow RA, Joanna, we sampled Italian pastries from Ferrera Bakery this past Saturday. Since 1892, they've been wowing New Yorkers with their cannolis and pignoli cookies. All I can say is Carlo's Bakery better watch out; Ferrera's desserts are just as yummy, and the commute is a whole lot shorter. Next, our group stopped at Tasty Dumplings. For only $1.25, we were able to get each resident a dinner of five dumplings. Our last stop was Chinatown Ice Cream Factory. Notorious for their bizarre flavors, I sampled blueberry, red bean, and pumpkin pie before finally deciding on red velvet cake ice cream. Just as quick as I finished, I started craving more. Just writing this post, I'm pretty sure I'll have to walk back over there tonight for more.

Sugar Plum Fairy Pops

Sweet treats have certainly been on the brain. So for this weeks floor program, I made cake pops. I found the recipe in my Ballerina Cookbook. This easy recipe make 36 pops, but be sure to allow yourself plenty of time.

Ingredients:

1 prepared cheesecake
36 popsicle sticks
12 ounces semisweet chocolate
1 tablespoon of shortening
Sprinkles (optional)

Chopped nuts (optional)

Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Use a tablespoon to scoop out 1-inch balls of cheesecake. With clean hands, shape the portion into a ball. Roll with you hands until the ball is smooth, and place it on the prepared baking sheet. Repeat to make about 36 balls.

Place your popsicle sticks in the top of each cheesecake ball. Make sure the stick goes almost through the other side, but not quite. Place the baking sheet in the freezer and freeze until they're hard. It'll take about three hours.

When you're ready to dip the pops, break the chocolate into pieces and put it in a microwave-safe bowl with the shortening. Microwave the chocolate on high for 30 seconds. Remove and stir. Repeat this step until your chocolate is melted, smooth, and creamy.

Remove your pops from the freezer. Dip each pop in the chocolate, tilting the bowl as needed to cover the cheesecake bowl. Remember to hold the pop upright so the chocolate drips down to cover the entire pop. Return each pop to the parchment-lined pan and sprinkle with your toppings (Besides sprinkles and nuts, I also chopped up peppermint sticks and drizzled melted peppermint patties on the top of some for variety.) Repeat this step for your remaining pops.

Store in the refrigerator until you're ready to serve.

The Artist

When I was growing up, my dad and I would spend hours in front of the television watching classic black and white movies. While most elementary students named Zoog Disney as their favorite program, for me it was all about Turner Classic Movies with Robert Osborne. The older they were the more I liked them. Beautiful costumes, rich story lines and brilliant acting consistently contributed to the top notch quality each movie goer expected. I'd watch these movies and just think "they sure don't make them like that anymore." Well tonight, I was proven wrong.

It's the late 1920s and handsome Hollywood actor George Valentin is the silent movie idol of the day. While at the premiere of his latest project, he meets Peppy Miller, a star-struck extra and aspiring actress. Sure Valentin might be married, but the two are instantly intrigued by one another, and Peppy's given a small role in his next picture. After the movie wraps, Valentin and his producer are forced to realize there's a new fad in the movie business...talkies. With audiences craving this fresh fashion, Valentin finds his future in the movie business to be quite uncertain.

Now, be prepared. Even though this movie was released in 2011, it is a black and white silent film. Repeatedly, I found myself laughing at this witty romance despite its lack of dialogue. If you only see one movie that's been nominated as Best Picture for this year's Oscars, this should be it!

Book Review: The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo

After tearing through the pages of The Hunger Games series, I found myself bookless with a week life of Christmas vacation. I scrounged through my sister's bookshelf and found a title I'd long but forgotten. Way back in 2009, on my first trip to the Strand, I'd picked up The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. I'd always intended on reading it but soon found myself drawn into the college freshmen lifestyle. Fast-forward to 2012 and the 600+ pages seemed a little daunting, but I thought "what the heck; it'll keep me from having to make another trip to Barnes and Noble."

Steig Larsson's first novel about Lisbeth Slander, The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, combines a murder mystery, a family saga, a financial intrigue, and a love story. After a confusing introduction, readers quickly discover Harriet Vanger, a scion of one of Sweden's wealthiest families disappeared over forty years ago. She vanished without a trace, and her aged uncle is determined to seek the truth. He hires Mikael Blomkvist, a journalist recently trapped by a libel conviction, to investigate. Aided by the pierced and tattooed tech prodigy Lisbeth Slander, they tap into a vein of iniquity and corruption.

Be warned this isn't your mom's Nancy Drew mystery story. The novel offers a thoroughly ugly view of human nature, especially when it comes to the way Swedish men treat Swedish women. In Larsson’s world, sadism, murder and suicide are commonplace. It may take a little while to sort through the various Vanger family names but keep reading; it definitely starts to gain speed after the first hundred pages.

Unfortunately, one week of classes are completed, and already I'm thinking this is going to be one long semester! The syllabus for "Japanese History Since WWII" had a wapping 13 books on it, so it doesn't look like I'll be having more fun reading anytime soon. But, if I can somehow manage to squeeze in the sequel, The Girl Who Played With Fire, I'll tell you have it measures up.

Creepily Watching Shoppers Below

Wow...this past week's been a little crazy. My Christmas Break came to an close; the NYU RAs had winter training, and I only have 12 more hours until the Spring 2012 Semester begins.

After a month of southern living, I was lucky enough to have a day to readjust to the not-so-laid-back pace of city living. This may sound a little silly, but one of my favorite places in New York City is the Macy's Starbucks. My mom and I discovered it on the trip we took to tour NYU, and now whenever I find myself with a few hours to kill, I somehow always end up there. There's just something about drinking a latte and watching people shoplift below that just screams happiness to me. Plus, I figure what better way to get re-acclimated back to the city life then by pretending to be a tourist.

Despite the calendar reading January, Georgia's weather wasn't hitting much below 55º. I'd gotten used to wearing skirts without leggings and short sleeve skirts again. But on only my second day back, New York got a mini snow storm. After walking to a meeting despite the falling flurries, I quickly came to the conclusion that there's nothing more beautiful than New York City in the winter, except the view of New York City in the winter through my apartment window.

Snow boots, not driving, super chapped lips, slippery sidewalks (all on top of working and studying)... I'm not really sure if I'm ready for all this yet.

Rediscovering a Disney Classic

Tale as Old as Time, Song as Old as Rhyme, Beauty and the Beast....

Yes, I may be a junior in college, but Beauty and the Beast is still one of my all time favorite movies. Belle's the best Disney Princess too. She knows there's more to a man than just good looks, and in her opinion nothing beats snuggling up with a good book. I've learned quite a few life lessons from her, so when I found out they were rereleasing the classic movie with a new 3D twist, nothing was going to keep me from going. Knowing how much I love this animated love story, my good friend, Dalton, surprised me with two tickets to today's matinee showing. Although no dancing dishes jumped out of the screen, it was worth the extra three dollars. It had added depth and made it seem as though I was an actual guest of Lumiere and Cogsworth.

Just in case its been a while since you've seen Beauty and the Beast, it's your typical fairytale. Belle and her father live in a quaint French village. After inventing a new contraption, he leaves his daughter for a chance to show at the fair. However, he's directionally challenged and winds up in an enchanted castle. The Beast imprisons him, but Belle comes to her father's rescue and offers her life for his. However, she quickly discovers her captor isn't really a beast but an enchanted prince.

Watching the flick on such a large screen, I noticed a few new things. For example, in the tiny town all the shop signs are in French except for the bookseller. Why's that? Maybe because in French, a book store is libraire, which is a false cognate to library. Sorry for being such a language nerd.

Something else, the prince had to both love someone and have them love him in return before his 21st birthday or be forever a beast. That's so early. If the rules of happily ever after applied to my life, I'd only have two more weeks to find Prince Charming. It's a good thing Disney doesn't write the script to my life, just that of my favorite movie.

But anyways, basically the whole point of this post is to encourage you to stop by you local movie theater and rediscover the magic of Beauty and the Beast. And be my guest to check out this scene too; here's the moment where Belle and the Beast discover their love for each other. It's all just so romantic!

Virginia Is For Lovers

Southern in the City from Richmond, VA

These past few days in Richmond have been a whirlwind of museums, monuments, and meals. My mom's been busy with meetings, and I've been looking to the AAA Tour Book for entertainment ideas.

Yesterday had a late start time. Momma didn't have to be at Virginia College until 3, so we looked to the hotel concierge for lunch options. Our massive Marriot had a list of downtown favorites. We decided to be adventurous and exchange the typical sandwich from Subway for a meal from Millie's. Despite its limited seating, this cute, eclectic restaurant had delicious options. I ordered a fresh vegetable wrap while my mom had a roast beef sandwich. For dessert, we split a pumpkin roll slice drizzled with caramel.

After she dropped me back at the hotel, I grabbed an umbrella and hit up the Virginia Library. According to my guide book, it was supposed to be a gem of the city, but I found it to be nothing special. Now, I'm a girl who loves books, but their content was lacking. The few titles they did have were so ordinary I quickly found myself leaving in search of a little more excitement.

The Historic Shockoe District had great reviews too. With its cobblestone streets and quaint, independent sellers, I discovered this was more my style. Great jewelry and books penned by indie authors could be had; unfortunately, if you're on a college budget, their prices might be a little too high, or at least they were for me.

After an hour or so of roaming the streets with my flimsy umbrella, I took shelter in the Virginia State Capitol. I'm sure with my rain-soaked jacket and matted hair I was quite a sight for the in-session senators, but I wanted to see where the oldest legislative body in the United States worked. The rest of the day was spent in the hotel; I snacked at the lobby Starbucks and ate dinner from the Concierge Lounge. Countless episodes of Toddlers and Tiaras played on my big screen TV. It was a very good day.

I'm Not So Sure If This is What Margaret Mitchel Had in Mind

As for this morning, I knew exactly where I wanted to go...The Museum of the Confederacy. With more than 15,000 artifacts, it houses some of the most unique pieces from the War Between the States. There of course was your typical gray jackets and rivalry, but I was particularly interested in the unusual objects from the "Knickknackery Exhibition." Here, they had children's dolls and women's dresses. The real garments of the day don't quite match the Scarlett O'Hara vision I had in mind, but they were still pretty cool to see.

With Valentine's Day just around the corner, I also paid special attention to cards soldiers made. Even though they were battling Yankees, these men scrounged together bits of lace and cardstock to make sure their loved ones knew they were thinking only of them...oh what Southern gentlemen they were!

Antique Valentines

Around noon, I made my way next door for a guided tour of the White House of the Confederacy. Here, Jefferson Davis with his wife and four children lived from August 1861 to the War's end. The home was restored in the mid 1980s. Original antiques from the time period as well as Davis family heirlooms decorate the home. It was quite an opulent plantation, certainly fit for a president. If you're a history nerd or just like Civil War trivia, I'd certainly suggest you stop by both places; for only $15, admission to the two attractions can be had.

For lunch, I made the walk to Comfort. Located at 200 West Broad Street, its name certainly wasn't misleading. The food was delicious, and their cute waiters made sure my glass of sweet tea was always full. Moderately priced, I'd suggest it for any Virginia tourist who's hungry for a scrumptious Southern meal.

After eating my mac-and-cheese, I walked back over to the Capitol Building. When I was there yesterday, I'd noticed the square's ultra green front lawn. The weather's absolutely beautiful, so I scoped out a shaded bench and opened up my book. A few chapters latter, I looked up and noticed a statue of Edgar Allan Poe stared back at me...how fitting.

Roll Tide!

ESPN Reporters deemed the November 5th matchup between LSU and Alabama as the "Football Game of the Century;" well tonight was most definitely the Rematch of the Century. Just as I said in a previous post, the Crimson Tide deserved another shot at the Tigers, and tonight they proved why.

After Maze pulled his hamstring in the first quarter, I was a little worried. But the Tide was the first on the board with a first of five beautiful field goals by Shelley. The key to winning this game was making less mistakes then their opponents; throughout the game Alabama played with confidence. And at the end of half, Alabama had 13 first downs with LSU at only one. The score was 9-0 in Bama's favor.

After the band played, my mom, Dalton and Mrs. Amy discussed the commentators’ outfits. They especially thought Gene Chizik, Auburn's head coach, looked particularly bad with his stripped suit and mismatched yellows.

LSU really began to give up in the 3rd quarter. Erin Andrews even said, "I've never seen an LSU team as lifeless. Alabama's taken everything away from them." Saban's Gang was riding Jordan Jefferson, assuring their score would remain at zero.

Seven full quarters passed before the Tigers even made it into Alabama territory. It was only in the game's last few minutes that a touchdown between the two teams was made. Trent Richardson ran from over 30 yards and secured the Crimson Tide's title. The Tide really did roll all over LSU with a final score of 21-0, the first shutout ever in any BCS Bowl Game. It's the second National Championship for Alabama in the past three years, and there's no way anybody can vote a team better than the Crimson Tide.

After Saban was presented with the Coach's Trophy, AJ McCarron won the offensive award, and Courtney Upshaw won the defensive MVP.

My little brother and dad were in New Orleans for the Big Game and I'm sure they're celebrating the Tiger's taming. I can't wait to hear their stories and see their pictures, but I hope they remember I'm a fan too and would like a souvenir.

Book Review: The Hunger Games

As much as I absolutely love books, I'm not exactly the fastest reader. I'm not one of these people who can just pick up a 400 page book and finish it within 24 hours. But, there's a new trilogy that's made me do just that, The Hunger Games. Written by Suzanne Collins, its genre is young adult fiction. That's not usually my cup of tea, but its combination of nerve-racking tension, thrilling action, and engaging love story kept me up until the wee hours. Seriously, I was surprised at how engrossing the plot was!

The Hunger Games is set in a future, post-apocalyptic North America, known as Panem. The country's been divided into thirteen districts, each controlled by an iron-fised Capitol. After a rebellious war broke out, District 13 was wiped out, and the remaining twelve were left to the Capitol's mercy. As a reminder of their power, once a year the Capitol selects a boy and girl from each the twelve districts to fight to the death on live television. Told from the point of view of sixteen-year-old Katniss Everdeen, the real action begins with the selection ceremony. When her younger sister is selected to attend the games, Katniss courageously volunteers to take her place.

The Hunger Games is the first in the trilogy, and already I've started reading the second book, Catching Fire. I'm only 100 pages into it, but already I'm engrossed in the story line. As for who would like this book...well if you ask me, any person who enjoys reading would love it. Collins has made sure there's something for everyone.

Also, the first movie of this action packed trilogy is set to be released on March 23, so get to reading!

New Adventures for a New Year

Birthday Becky

Goodness; I can't believe it's been so long since I've written a new blog post. I'm so sorry, but I've been without internet access for the last few days. Quite a bit's happened for the Thublin/Schien family. We visited my cousins in Orland; my sister turned 19, and my mom surprised us with an excited New Years trip to the mountains. Of course there's been a lot of cupcake baking with all this celebrating, but a few unexpected adventures have transpired as well.

For Becky's 19th Birthday Party, she requested an evil witch themed party. Complete with candied apple cupcakes and a table full of presents, it was certainly a shindig. After she blew out her candles, we were told we needed to set about packing our bags, for the next morning we'd be heading to a cozy cabin in Fort Mountain State Park with the Tribbles (you may remember them from our 2011 Beach Trip or Summer Cabin in the Woods Weekend).

After just three hours in the car, we were up in the mountains. A full 2,108 feet separated us from sea level. Of course, the view was absolutely spectacular. That's one thing you won’t get in New York City…a beautiful view filled with trees.

Our cabin was the perfect size for our family of nine and one little brown dog. The only thing missing was a fireplace grate. The temperature would get down to below freezing, so this led to our first adventure. My sister anticipated a late night New Year celebration with an afternoon nap, and the remaining three girls made the trek down the mountain hoping for an open Ace Hardware. Just our luck, it had just closed and wouldn't be open until the 2nd. On our shopping trip to Bi-Lo (Mountain Town's version of a grocery store), I noticed this metal stand that could become a make-shift grate. We had our own Thelma and Louise moment and decided to “borrow” it.

After our could-have-been-run-in-with-the-law, we went back to Cabin 9 and rang in the New Year, watching the Peach Drop on our tiny TV.

Forget the Subway, I Have a New Mode of Transportation

The start of 2012 brought a new resolution: I want to be more adventurous. And on the first, I had my first opportunity...horseback riding. That's right, this wanna-be-1950s housewife turned into a mountain woman for an hour long ride on a big horse named Picket. Before leaving the stables, our guide comforted me by saying Picket's their gentle, babysitting horse. Usually, it's the little kids that ride him. But, that certainly wasn't running through my head as we broke out into a fast trot. Of course, there were no major incidents. The only scare you could say was when I dropped one of my monkey mittens. And the trail was the prettiest place I've ever been too. We saw three waterfalls and more than enough trees for me to fill my quota.

Of course, I couldn't be kept out of the kitchen for long. Mr. Steve Tribble is a New Years Baby, and he was celebrating a big birthday (the big 6-0). So after our hour long ride, we drove back I did what I do best...made more cupcakes. There's no denying my love for him because, despite the fact that I root the Crimson Tide, our party was Auburn themed. Navy and burnt orange sprinkles or iced AU’s decorated the chocolate cupcakes.

Attempting to Make Smores

January 2nd had a few unexpected adventures as well. After lunch, I made s’mores over our open fire (what would we have done if I wouldn’t have found that grate???). Sure, this may not sound too crazy to some, but for me it's pretty out of character. The afternoon ended with a two mile hike up the mountain to see the fort that's given the GA State Park its name. The sign's a bit misleading. It just says "Site This Way:" it somehow forgets to mention that its way up this super steep hill that’s made up of about a billion step. But, the view from up top was breathtaking, and we took some goofy pictures in front of the mysterious fort.

I was a little sad when we had to pack our bags and leave the cabin this morning. I know, beautiful mountain towns probably don't have the best news stations, but it sure would be fun to leave in one someday.

Another Christmas Visit By Mr. Potato Head

As we drive to Orland, Florida and suffer from candy coma, classic Christmas tunes blare from the CD player. Seeing as how the drive's supposed to be six hours but thanks to the traffic it'll be closer to eight, there's been tons of time for me to remember some of my favorite Christmas memories.

My all time favorite was when I was only four. I'm not so sure if my memory is just that good or if it has something to do with the fact that my dad videotapped that morning, but ayways, I'll share it with you. It was the year Toy Story had come out, and all my little sister wanted was a Mr. Potato Head. When we'd visited Santa that year, I of course had a very exstensive list complete with a puppy, a new dolly, crayons, and multiple Disney Princess movies. But still, all she wanted was a spud of her own. So, when we ran to the living room to see if Santa had visited, little Becky's face was probably the cutest thing ever when she saw not only Mr. Potato Head but also Mrs. Potato Head, Spud Children, and Potato Pets! We also got a golden retreiver, named Jingles, bikes, and a Barbie Jeep that year. Still, Becky's prized present was still Mr. Potato Head.

Which brings me to Christmas 2011. Every year Santa always gives us each a toy along with all our growny gifts. Joseph got Monoploy, and I got Buzz Lightyear Operation. But Becky, she got a new Mr. Potato Head. Her original spud muffin has long been discarded. But that certainly didn't stop my baby sister from tearing open the packaging yesterday and rearranging his face to her favorite expression (wide-eyed with his tongue out). She may be 19-or a least she will be on December 30th- but nothing can come between Becky and her Mr. Potato Head. I bet she'll even take hers back to Gaineville with her when she leaves in a few weeks.

Christmas Cookies With Ma

It's been a tradition for as long as I can remember that each year my sister and I bake Christmas Cookies with our grandmother, Ma. When we were little, sprinkles would hide underneath Ma's cabinets until well after Easter, but over the years, we've become quite professional. If you'd like to start a new tradition of your own, I'd definitely suggest cookie sugar baking! They're simple, tasty, and fun!

Ingredients for Homemade Cookie Dough:

The Dough

1 lb. butter
2½ cups sugar
4 Cups All Purpose Flour
2 eggs

Cream together the butter and sugar with your mixer. Gradually add the four cups of flour. Lastly add the two eggs. Chill for eight hours.

After you've cut your dough into your favorite holiday shapes. Bake for 8-10 minutes at 350ºF and enjoy!

An Afternoon In Albany
This afternoon, we loaded into my grandmother's Cadillac and made the 2½ hour drive to Albany, Georgia. My great grandmother, Billie Berkshire, lives in an adorable assisted living facility down there, and we wanted to visit her before all the Christmas Craziness sets in. She's truly the cutest little old lady ever. She still wears makeup, fancy jewelry, holiday sweaters, and gets her hair down ever week. She showed us her bedroom and miniature decorated tree before we settled down and gave her gifts. We'd brought her some of our delicious homemade cookies, and when she opened the tin she exclaimed with glee that they were too pretty to eat. She was so thoughtful. When she found out Becky and I were coming, she insisted that one of her friends stop by the local Christian bookstore and pick us out something too. She's so thoughtful, giving us matching stuffed reindeer.

As for lunch, she'd reserved the private dining room...yes, it's quite swanky there! She was a little bossy to the head chef, telling him that we wanted mashed potatoes instead of the roasted ones on the menu, but seeing as how she'll be 97 in January, he just said "yes man." After our magnificent meal (complete with specially ordered apple pie and ice cream), she showed us off to all of her friends. My little brother, Joseph, wheeled her around as she pointed out the bingo room, the library, the garden, and the decorated doors of all her friends.

One of her best friends, Louise, is 105. I'm pretty sure the only reason why Grandma Berkshire hangs out with her is because compared to her she's quite young and spry. That reminds me...One of our running jokes we have about Grandma Berkshire is her age. She constantly lies about it. Usually, she'll tell people she's only 92, instead of her actual age of 96. Doesn't she understand that by the time she's reached her age there really isn't much of a difference? But today, when we asked her, she surprisingly answered truthfully.

I hated having to leave her, but we had a long drive ahead of us and had to make it back in time for dinner. As we were leaving, she told my grandmother, Ma, that us visiting made her Christmas. I don't think she realized, but seeing her made mine too.

Top Ten Christmas Movies

I've been watching quite a bit of ABC's 25 Days of Christmas but I don't always agree with their choices. So, I decided to list my all time favorite holiday flicks.

If it was up to me, these top ten would be on constant repeat.

10) Eloise at Christmastime: The precocious six-year-old Manhattanite of Kay Thompson's beloved Eloise books gets into the holiday spirit while playing cupid in this made-for-TV comedy. Like much of the hotel staff, she's excited about the upcoming marriage of Rachel Peabody, the daughter of the hotel's owner, to handsome Brooks Oliver. However, Eloise learns that Brook's motivations for marrying Rachel are not sincere, and so the youngster ties to sway Rachel away from her fiance and toward Bill, a good-hearted waiter in the hotel's restaurant.

9) A Little Drummer Boy: Every time my dad watches this 1968 Christmas classic, he cries. It's the beautiful story of an orphaned drummer boy. He hates humanity but finds his life forever changed when he meets the three wise men on route to Bethlehem. With its adorable animals and sweet storyline, this 30 minute movie is just perfect at helping me remember the real reason for the season.

8) White Christmas: With its catchy tunes and beautiful costumes, no wonder I love White Christmas. The storyline follows a successful song-and-dance team who becomes romantically involved with a sister act. The double couple teams up to save a failing Vermont inn. Starring Bing Crosby and Danny Daye, it features the songs of Irving Berlin, including the title number "White Christmas." It truly is a feel-good flick.

7) Rudolph: When I first moved to Manhattan, this was the first movie I purchased all on my own. By far it's one of my favorites. This iconic claymation is the story of everyone's favorite red nose reindeer. Along with Hirby the Elf and the misfit toys, they search to find a place that will accept them for what they really are.

6) The Polar Express: On Christmas Eve, a doubting boy boards a magical train that's headed to the North Pole. The 2004 computer-animated film is based on Chris Van Allsburg's book of the same name. From the crazy conductor to St. Nicholas himself, Tom Hanks provides the voice for six distinct characters. With its catchy songs and brilliant colors, it's certainly proved itself to be a modern classic. But, it's the dance sequence of waiters who dispense hot chocolate on the train that ranks it as one of my most favorites.

5) Miracle of 34th Street: After becoming Santa's replacement at the annual Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, Kris Kringle is hired by the event's coordinator, Doris Walker, to play the part for the flagship New York City store on 34th Street. While Fred Gailey, an attorney and neighbor of Doris, is babysitting the young divorcee's six-year-old daughter Susan, he takes her to see Kris. When Doris finds out she asks Kris to tell Susan that he isn't really Santa Claus, but Kris surprises here by insisting that he is. It's a family friendly film filled with just enough romance. And it wouldn't be as good if he didn't have a happily ever after. Plus, it's available for instant watch on Netflix.

4) It's a Wonderful Life: An angel helps George, a compassionate but despairingly frustrated businessman, by showing what life would have been like if he never existed. Starring James Stewart and Donna Reed, the film has been named one of the most inspirational American films of all time. It ends with a ringing bell of the tree, signifying that an angel has earned his wings. George happily confirms this now realizing that while he did not get to follow his dreams of world travel, he truly has a wonderful life.

3) Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas: ABC Family may play the 2000 Jim Carrey remake, but my favorite story of the grumpy green Grinch is the original. It follows a hermit who hatches a plan to steal Christmas from the Whos of Whoville. But thanks to a few words from Cindy Lou Who, he realizes the error of his ways.

2) Santa Claus is Comin' to Town: After the truck that delivers letters to the North Pole breaks down, its mailman tells the story of how Santa Claus and several Christmas traditions came to be. With lovable characters like Kris Kringle, the Burgermesiter, Topper the Penguin, and the Winter Warlock no wonder it's my absolute favorite animated holiday movie. Whether you're 4 or 84, it's definitely worth watching. Plus, it's not too long. So if you need a quick holiday fix, it's the perfect movie to watch.

1) The Santa Clause: Hands down, The Santa Clause is the best Christmas move of all time! Tim Allen plays Scott Calvin, a man who inadvertently kills Santa on Christmas Eve and finds himself magically recruited to take his place. I remember seeing this movie in theaters when I was a little girl, and now each time its on (or its two sequels), I always stop what I'm doing and watch it. Truly, it's the best holiday movie out there. If you haven't seen it, stop what you're doing this very minute, and check it out on YouTube.

Finished With Finals

Even though I've been back in Georgia for two days, I wasn't actually finished with my finals until noon today. Sure, I'd taken my exams, but I still had a 1500 word essay due. Of course, once my delta flight landed Saturday at 2:30, the procrastination officially began. It wasn't a hard assignment, but I just couldn't bring myself to write it. That is, until 6am this morning. But you know what, I finished it with 23 minutes to spare.

Part of my reason for procrastination was our family's annual Christmas party. Yesterday, we all gathered from far and wide and spent the afternoon celebrating the season. Even though we only get together once of twice a year, it's always a wonderful catching up session.

Time to Celebrate
Now that my semester's done, it's time to celebrate. Becky and I are watching Disney's Once Upon A Christmas on VHS. I love its previews; the movie's from 1999, so they all say "now available to own on video"...seriously, too cute. And, I'm excited for an entire month of fun reading. I'm in the middle of Candace Bushnell's Lipstick Jungle, and after that it's on to Super Sad True Love Story. The Strand displayed it as one of best books of 2011, so I'm excited if my idea of a best book matches theirs. The third novel by American writer Gary Shteyngart, it takes place in a near-futer dystopian New York where life is dominated by media and retail. The son of a Russian immigrant, protagonist Lenny Abramov, a middle-aged, middle class, and otherwise unremarkable man whose mentality is still in the past century, falls madly in love with Eunice Park, a young Korean-American struggling with materialism and the pressures of her traditional Korean family.

My Take on the Final BCS Ranking

In a metropolitan college like NYU, sports make take a back seat to academia and the arts, but that's certainly not the case for state school across the country. So when my journalism professor challenged us to write a commentary, I certainly had no trouble picking my topic...college football. Here's my script for Wednesday's live webcast.

Tonight I’d like to discuss the approaching BCS National Football Game. On January 9th, No. 2 ranked Alabama Crimson Tide will once again take on the No. 1 ranked LSU Tigers in what some are calling “the football game of the century.” Now, I know the Oklahoma State head coach, Mike Gundy, went on Sports Center after the Dec. 4th final ranking and questioned the appearance of two South Eastern Conference teams in the national championship. He argues that until there’s a year without a team from the conference ranking number one or two in regular season, all other leagues are simply be discredited when the voters are deciding on the big game matchup. But, I’m sorry this year, there’s no questions the polls spoke the truth. Obviously, LSU deserves to be there. They had a pretty hard lineup playing against teams like Arkansas and Tennessee and still remained undefeated. After they won the December 3rd SEC Championship against University of Georgia, there was pretty much no doubt on their place. But as for the Crimson Tide, they defeated four ranked team this season, including Penn State, Arkansas, Florida and Auburn. Sure, Alabama didn’t play for their conference title like the Oklahoma Cowboys, but that’s only because both LSU and Alabama make up the Western Division of the SEC. Both Alabama and Oklahoma had one loss this season, so it wasn’t like voters could have chosen two team who were undefeated. But the Cowboys lost to unranked Iowa State while the Crimson Tide was to No. 1 ranked LSU by three points in overtime. Don’t get me wrong, Oklahoma State’s a good team; they finished the season at number three and they’ll take on Stanford at the January 2nd Tostitos Fiesta Bowl, but the polls chose correctly for the ultimate title...Alabama deserves another shoot at LSU. And the January 9th, BCS Championship Game is gonna be a great matchup. I know I’ll definitely be watching.

Happy Anniversary to My Blog!

Happy one year anniversary to my blog, Southerner in the City. That's right, this day last year was my first ever post about keeping true to my Southern roots while embracing the Manhattan lifestyle. Over 120 blurbs have been written with topics ranging from interning with Good Housekeeping to my lack of a love life. Hopefully, I've suggested books you'd like to read and given you some good recipes and crafts too. It's been tons of fun to write, but I'm just getting started. Here's to another wonderful year!

My Friday was blissfully mundane. I started class at my usual 8am time slot, then spent a few hours in my second home (a.k.a. the Journalism building) before my three hour Resource Center shift. The Arts Collateral had its very own destressing event for Lafayette residents, so I got to spent an hour doing one of my favorite things...baking cupcakes. As for this evening, I spent it wth my Brooklyn babies eating pizza and watching Harry Potter movies. It may not seem so out of the ordinary, but for me it was just the tiny break I nereded a I gear upo for finals week.

Oh. One last thing, as I was going through my "archives," I noticed I never included my alltime favorite Christmas cookie recipe. They're called Seven Layer Cookies, and for our family, no special event would be complete without them. They're quite tasty and super simple.

Ingredients

1/4 lb. butter
1 c. crushed graham crackers
1 c. angel flakes coconut
1 pkg. Nestle chocolate chips (6 oz.)
1 pkg. Nestle butterscotch chips (6 oz.)
1 can sweetened condensed milk, NOT evaporated milk
1 c. walnuts meats, chopped

Melt butter in an 9 x 13 inch pan. Add layer by layer (do not mix) above ingredients in order listed.
Bake 32 minutes at 350 degrees in an aluminum pan OR 28 minutes at 350 degrees if a glass dish is used. Cut into bars when cool. ENJOY!

**Note, because of the way most of these ingredients are packaged, I usually make two at a time. If you're doing that, just buy an additional can of sweetened, condensed milk and have an extra stick of butter on hand.

My Ode to Crate and Barrel

I've officially discovered my new favorite spot in the City. . .Crate and Barrel. I know, I know it sounds a little silly, but seriously, I love everything about this store. I was walking home from the gym last night and decided I'd take a quick look inside. They had a cute Christmas plate in the window, so I just figured what the heck I could use another holiday decoration. Walking through the doors was like entering a Sussie Homemaker paradise. A few of my favorites finds include a spatula with cupcake imprints, a candy cane shaped pan, recycled sari garland, tons of ornaments, and so many plates. Resisting the urge to buy it all was hard, and I ended up buying the cutest Christmas cup. Dancing elves and tiny snowflakes decorate its sides, but I think it was this super cute advertisement that sealed the deal. When I left the store, my wallet may have been a little lighter but I had a wonderful red bag filled with precious presents to show for it. But, I'm a little scared I may be addicted. After a full day of studying-I literally spent eight hours sitting in the same chair of Kimmel working on two paper-the only thing I wanted to do was eat a bowl of ice cream (even though it was 40º outside) and wander around Crate and Barrel. Obviously, I knew their merchandise wouldn't have changed from yesterday, but I needed to see their bright and colorful decorations just the same.

Today may only be December 2nd, but my seasonal celebrations have already begun. On Thanksgiving morning, I turned on the Pandora Holiday Station, and it won't be changed until well after the New Year. I've already watched Rudolph and drank the first gingerbread latte of the year. Even when I was at work yesterday, the little boy I babysit was playing "What Child is This" and "Jolly Old St. Nicholas" on the piano. Each day leading up to Christmas, I also get to open an advent treat. A few years ago, Momma started this tradition, and even though I may be living 1000 miles away, she makes sure I have a special surprise. It's nothing too big (yesterday I got cupcake shaped post-its and today Big Red), but unwrapping the trinkets sure do put a smile on my face. And of course, I wouldn't be my momma's daughter unless my apartment looked like Santa's elves decorated it. As soon as I got back from the airport Monday night, I set up a tiny tree, hung my stocking, and changed the plate rack to include candy canes. I even made a pitstop at the Union Square Holiday Market after class today. I found my baby sister the cutest birthday gift--hopefully she'll like it. And tomorrow morning, I'll be heading over to SohoTrees; my next story will feature the local company and the whimsical way they do Christmas. If you ask me, it really is the most wonderful time of the year!

Mary Poppins was the First Ornament I hung this Year

Before hitting the TSA State Football Championship, we bought our Christmas trees yesterday afternoon. After much debate, the family decided on two plump, 8-footers as the base for our decorating. And today, as we watched SEC football, we've spent quite bit of time sifting through the ornaments, adorning their branches. My stepdad, Bryan, just declared the toy room tree is finished, but our Disney tree (yes, my family has an entire tree dedicated strictly to Mickey and the gang) still needs some work.

Like most people, Christmas is by far my favorite time of the year. I love the lights, the smells, the gift-giving, the songs, the movies, the decorations...basically anything related to the holidays is bound to make me smile. But, it's those silly family traditions that really set December apart in my mind. All five of us pile into my mom's Ford Explorer and make a trip to the local Chick-fil-A to buy peppermint chocolate chip milkshakes. The South's famous chicken joint decorates the drive thru line with hundreds of brilliant lights that sparkle in time with a selected radio station's Christmas music. Each year, we catch ourselves pulling into a parking spot to sip our shake and watch the light show.

My little sister heads back to Gainesville tomorrow, and I leave for NYC the day after that. Obviously, I'll be sad to leave my family, but the great news in we'll both be back December 17th. Only one journalism piece, two papers, and one final stand between me and Christmas Break. Let the countdown begin.

Welcome to the South!

I knew I was officially heading home when the main topic on my flight was college football. That's right, cute old men were debating Alabama vs. Auburn, so of course I piped in with my very own "Roll Tide." Southern accents rich with y'alls were blabbing about the SEC's top quarterbacks; it was just what I needed to get me in the holiday mood!

Then, after I landed in Atlanta, my sweet daddy and baby brother (who's an absolute giant at 6'2") fixed my caffeine fix with a quick Starbucks run and grabbed my luggage-what gentlemen. As to be expected, the traffic was horrendous and dinner time was quickly approaching, so we stopped off and ate at one of Georgia's best barbecue joints, OBs. I absolutely loved the waitress; when I asked for tea, she automatically knew I wanted it sweet. Seeing as how I'm a vegetarian, I can't really comment on their specialities, but their fried okra and crinkle fries were pretty tasty. But the real kicker was their decorations.

I finally pulled in the driveway around 8:30, and now I'm sitting in the living room, drinking Amaretto with my momma and sister...life is good. Happy Turkey Day Y'all!

The Children's Museum of Manhattan will be celebrating Turkey Day and its famous parade until January 16th. It's absolutely perfect for little visitors. And as for my next piece, I'm quite excited to say that I'll be covering the GISA Football State Championship game this upcoming Friday. We're supposed to do a story on what best represents our hometown, and I can't think of anything better. So, for all you Tattnall fans, I'll be in need of some great interviews!

A Night at the Museum

In conjunction with Faculty Fellows in Residents Week, I took a group of Lafayette students to the Museum of Moving Images this past Friday. Only one word can describe their new exhibit, Jim Henson's Fantastic World....AWESOME! The floor featured over 120 artifacts, like drawings, storyboards, and props. Fifteen iconic puppets (including Miss Piggy, Kermit the Frog, Rowlf, and Bert and Ernie )were also on display. It sure did make me miss the good ol' days when my biggest dilemma was deciding on whether to watch Barney or Sesame Street.

The second floor is devoted to movies. Everything from editing to acting has its own special section here. One seven minute exhibit really grabbed my attention; it's a movie mashup that combines scenes from all of Hollywood's best feature films.

Overall, I'd say it's a great museum with a balance of hands-on activities and exhibits that will interest youngsters and adults alike. So if you find yourself in Astoria with nothing to do, be sure to check the museum out. Tickets will only cost you $5 for children, $7.50 for students, and $10 for adults.

Reporting on the Real Quidditch World Cup

For my journalism piece this week, I followed the NYU Quidditch team and their race to the World cup. More than 5000 people spent the day at Randall's Island cheering on their favorite of the 93 teams. Although the NYU Nundus, lost 3 of their 4 games, it was an absolutely perfect way to spend my Saturday. The only downfall was the amount of time I had to spend editing. Literally, I had almost two hours of B-Roll; trying to compress it to just four minutes was quite a challenge.

Only 43 More Days Until Christmas

This semester's been the quickest yet. It seems like professors just passed out the syllabus and already they're prepping us for finals. It's weird to think that Thanksgiving's just around the corner Then before you know it, the cornucopia will be back in the attic, and candy canes will cover every square inch of the tree.

Even though Halloween was just last week (and today's high was definitely 70º F), Starbucks has officially switched their menu to feature Christmas blends. Ordering my usual Pumpkin Spice Latte this morning felt a little strange, especially when it was served in a cup adorned with reindeer and snowflakes.

Even Facebook postings already speak of "Jingle Bells" blaring from the loud speaker.

I Can't Believe Today's Really November 10th

One Brooklyn brownstone even has Santa's Official Count Down To Christmas Clock. As we were walking to Tae Know Do this afternoon, the little boy I babysit starting listing all the presents he receive this year.

And that’s when I had a slight panic attack....usually I’m so prepared and love finding the perfect gift for every single person on my list. And as of yet, my only holiday-related-purchase was a cute pair of socks for my baby sister. I scoured the Urban Outfitters website, and I think I’m on to something for Joseph, my 16 year old brother, but as for my parents, the juries still out. As per usual, my lack of funds is keeping me from purchasing the perfect present: two tickets for the Disney Cruise. Perhaps, they’ll settle for yet another NYU sweatshirt?

The Bobst Atrium

The moto for my Journalism as Literature class is "Read to Best to Be the Best." It's one of my favorite classes I've taken at NYU; every week we literally just sit around in a circle for three hours and discuss the literary elements of the 20 or so pages we were assigned for that week. I know, I'm such a nerd. But finally, we got to put all the skills we've learned to the test. For our assignment, our professor asked us to imagine that we are writing a magazine feature about some of New York's most interesting and unusual architectural spaces. We plan to devote 500 words to a description of the NYU Bobst Library atrium. Here's my finished piece, but don't let the small word count full you; writing it actually took me a couple of hours:

   Situated on Washington Square South between LaGuardia Place and Schwartz Pedestrian Plaza stands a 12 story, terra-cotta colored building. Designed by Phillip Johnson and Richard Frost, the Elemer Holmes Bobst Library was completed in 1972. But today, it is one of the largest academic libraries in the US, housing more than 3.3 million volumes.

   After making one’s way through the swarm of smokers, six swipe stations greet every Bobst visitor. The library’s atrium is roughly 40 yards by 35 yards. To the right is the granite book return/check-in service desk, and to the left is the Mamdouhas Bobst Gallery, where New York University treasures are on display. Eight elevator doors line the back wall. Above them, are the stairs, which have a very distinct look about them: every two floors make the collar of a v-neck, with a flattened edge that serves as a bridge. In total, there are five doubled layers that make up the second through eleventh floors; the twelfth floor has it’s own balcony.

   After two students jumped from the open-air crosswalks inside the library, falling to the stereogram patterned marble floor below, NYU installed plastic, plexiglass on each level to prevent further suicides.

   When someone turns their back to the elevators and looks up, six oversized study rooms are above. Wall to wall windows let in the light as students cram for upcoming quizzes.

   To see the atrium from a different perspective, one should make their way to the farthest right elevator. Press the up button, and the twelfth floor’s the only stop available. The doors to the elevator open. Look over the edge of the railing. Peer past the metal cross atop each spike, and look towards the atrium’s floor. It creates an optical allusion that resembles the pricks of a fence post.

   After one’s had their fill of the dreary scene, they should make their way back to the ground floor. Walk towards either the far left or far right corner, back towards the security desk. A set of stairs will take them to the lower levels. Here, in the Bobst basement, Steven Stanzak lived from September 2003 to April 2004. After finding out that his NYU scholarship, four jobs, and private loans would cover his tuition but not his housing costs, the Bobst Boy (as he’s been nicknamed) refused to drop out or transfer to a cheaper university, choosing instead to live amongst the stacks. Eventually however, the Washington Square News ran a piece on him, and the dean said he could no longer live there. However, he was provided with free NYU housing for the remanding weeks of the semester.

   In total, it’s estimated that more than 6,500 people visit the library each day. Whether they’re a student cramming for a midterm or a hopeful high schooler on a tour, it’s impossible to go through the revolving doors at Bobst and not be amazed by its grandiose appearance.

My CORA and I All Dressed Up

Happy Halloween to one and all. Funny thing...I actually forgot today was the big day. I saw the cutest little girl dressed up as Strawberry Shortcake this morning, and only then did I realize today's actually Halloween, not yesterday. Of course, that might have something to do with the fact that I have class until 10:30pm tonight and wore my housewife costume last night. It's officially, my ghoulish games are officially over for Halloween 2011.

As for last night Frank Sinatra blared, and 168 people sampled my homemade pumpkin, coconut, and apple pies. For the most part, reviews were positive; I think they were just surprised our desserts weren't store bought. I had two excuses for spending all of Saturday baking 1) I was on duty and couldn't leave Laf and 2) I was simply getting into character for my Halloween costume. But honestly, I just love baking. Sometimes, I do wonder what my life would have been like if I'd been born 50 years earlier; I think it's safe to say that I would have made an excellent housewife.

Mad About Pie

In celebration of Halloween, Lafayette Residence Hall will be hosting our first ever Haunted Hallways extravaganza tonight. Residents will be able to trick-or-treat from floor to floor, and each RAs room will be passing out goodies. Because my CORA and I were on duty/call all weekend long, we decided to make our dessert. Obviously, I haven't been able to dress up this year, so I decided weeks ago that our floor theme was to be Mad Men because I have this adorable 1960s housewife dress that I actually want to wear. So, to compliment our theme, we spent hours making three types of pie yesterday...Pumpkin, Apple, and Coconut. Sure, it was quite time consuming, but we sure had fun. I just hope everyone likes them. Now, we only had $65 for the entire event, so we had to get a little creative in our purchasing. In total, we were able to make six pies and still stay under budget.

Of course, my first stop on my recipe hunt was Paula Deen's website. We slightly modified her directions and made our own version of Pumpkin Pie.

Ingredients (per pie)

1 (8-ounce) package of cream cheese, softened

15 oz. of canned pumpkin

1 cup sugar

1/4 teaspoon salt

1 egg plus 2 egg yolks

1 cup half-and-half

teaspoon vanilla extract

1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1 piece pre-made pie dough

Directions:

Preheat the oven to 350º F.

For the filling, a large mixing bowl, beat the cream cheese with a hand mixer. Add the pumpkin and beat until combined. Add the sugar and salt, and beat until combined. Add the eggs (mixed with the yolks), half-and-half, and melted butter, and beat until combined. Finally, add the vanilla and cinnamon, and beat until incorporated.

Pour the filling into the pie crust and bake for an hour, and until the center is set. Let the pie cool to room temperature and cut into slices.

Next, we made cooks.com "Mom's Easy Apple Pie." I must admit, the name was a little deceiving; although quite tasty, the apple pie was certainly the most time consuming.

Ingredients:

Pillsbury ready made pie crust
6-7 apples (I used 2 granny smith, 2 gala, and 2 red)
3/4 c. sugar
1 tsp. cinnamon
1 tbsp. flour

Directions:
Peel and cut your 6 apples; mix your sugar in with the apples. Blend cinnamon and flour into a bowl. Add the cinnamon-flour blend to your apples and sugar mixture. Place the pie crust into the bottom of your pan. Add in the filling and dot with butter. Cover it with the top pie crust layer. Brush with milk, and sprinkle sugar on top.

Bake at 375°F for 50 minutes or until done.

To give a little variety to our all fall menu, we ended the afternoon by baking two Coconut Pies.

Ingredients:

3eggs
1 3/4cups milk
1/4cup butter, melted
1 1/2teaspoons vanilla
1cup flaked or shredded coconut
3/4cup sugar
Ready-made pie crust

Directions:
Preheat the oven to 350º and lay your ready-made pie crust in the pan.

In large bowl, stir together all ingredients until blended. Pour into pie plate. Bake 45 to 50 minutes or until golden brown and knife inserted in the center comes out clean.

New York City Pop-Up Shops

For my journalism class this week, our professor assigned us our very first day-of-air piece. After we sent him an email, we literally had until 10pm that night to find a story, shoot it, write it, edit it, and get it on the web. The exercise's purpose was to show us what it's like to be an actual reporter with quick deadlines. Because I'm on call/duty all weekend (so I won't be able to leave Laf late Sunday night), I knew my only day to produce a package was Friday. So, here you have it. I finished the exercise and even had 4 1/2 hours to spare. Hope you enjoy my spooktacular story!

As much as I absolutely love my major (and trust me I do), this semester I've spent more time in the Journalism Department than I have in my own apartment. When I knew all the security guards on a first name basis that probably should have been my cue, but nonetheless I continuously find myself on the 7th floor of the Cooper Square building at all hours of the day. Here a few of the projects I've been working on. It's only been a few weeks since I first picked up a camera, but at least I'd like to think I'm improving.

Hello Again John Steinbeck

So, I'm officially deciding that I like John Steinbeck. As an eighth grader, I remember reading The Pearl and absolutely hating it. Seriously, the short text took me weeks to get through. But now, I finally feel like I'm old enough to understand what makes Steinbeck so great.

Book Review: Cannery Row by John Steinbeck

For starters, I read Cannery Row. While the setting for this novel is somewhat bleak--an impoverished and ofttimes depressed coastal town in California--the characters are brought to life by everyday exchanges and emotions the reader can relate to. It's a book without much of a plot, but there's no denying it captures the feeling and people of Monterey. The "story" of Canner Row follows the adventures of Mack and the boys, a group of unemployed but resourceful men. They inhabit a converted fish-meal shack on the edge of a vacant cleverly named Palace Flophouse. Sprinkled throughout are also interactions with the local grocer, Lee Chong, and Cannery Row's marine biologist, Doc. The book follows Mack and his friend as they try to do something nice for Doc. Eventually, they hit on the idea that they should throw a party in his honor; and immediately the entire town rallies around the idea. If you're trying to ease back into Steinbeck, I'd certainly say this is a great book for getting reacquainted. Plus, the chapters are super short.

Book Review: Sweet Thursday by John Steinbeck

After finishing Cannery Row, I quickly found out a sequel had been written...Sweet Thursday. Again, Steinbeck follows the quirky characters of Monterrey, but he also introduces us to Fauna, the new headmistress of the local brothel, and to Hazel, a bum whose mother must have wanted a daughter. Additionally, a love interest for Doc's been written in; however, she's not exactly the kind of girl you'd take home to meet your parents, but you can't help but love her. Sure, I've read some reviews that say Sweet Thursday isn't as good as its prequel, but I completely disagree. I absolutely loved it. Maybe it's the time period (following WWII), or maybe it's the romance. But, I think it all works together and creates an absolutely wonderful read.

To Many Hours With Final Cut

These past couple of days have truly been a whirlwind. I not only spent the weekend in Georgia but come Monday night found out my Journalism assignment had to be completely finished (including Final Cut edits) by Wednesday at noon. I was on call Tuesday night and had a French exam too...basically my first full night of sleep for the week was Thursday! Multiple, daily trips to Starbucks for a Venti Pumpkin Spice latte is the only way I made it through.

It all started Sunday night. I'd spent an absolutely wonderful weekend back home in Georgia. During my four days of Southern bliss I ate way to much food, watched football, heard my little brother play in the halftime show, and shopped for Christmas presents. Despite the not so convient timing, just getting to love on my mom made the whole thing worth it. Anyways, my plane landed in JFK around midnight, but I didn't actually get to sleep until 1:30. And, I had to set my alarm for 4:30am to finish a script for one of my classes.

Come Monday night, I'd originally thought I'd have a pretty early evening. After my class finished at 10pm, my plan was to go straight to bed, but he told us that our assignment had to be ready for grading my Wednesday at noon, so obviously that through a giant wrench in my plans. I didn't leave the journalism building until 11:30pm; then I came home and spent a few more hours editing on Final Cut Express.

Tuesday, I actually got to sleep in until 6:30am! After a normal day of classes, I rushed back to Lafayette by 5pm because I was on call. We had our first fire drill of the semester, so rounds ran later than usual. In total, I spent eight hours on Tuesday tweeking my assignment. But, I still had to study for my French midterm. Around 1am I finally cracked open my textbook and practiced the conjugations for avoir (to have) and etre (to be).

My wakeup call for Wednesday came bright and early...5:00am to be exact. I wanted to get my last bit of studying in before the big test. After completing my Examen One, I realized that I'd yet to write my history paper. Once again, it was going to be another sleepless night.

Come Thursday at noon, I'd finally finished all my assignments for the week! I took a nap in the middle of the day, and actually got to bed at a decent hour that night. Now, I have a four day weekend- thanks for that random Fall Break NYU. Sure, I'll have to spending some time editing another piece, and I'll want to get a jumpstart on midterm studying. But most importantly, I just plan on relaxing.

Is This Really My Life?

These past few days have been one amazing adventure after another. I've been meaning to post blog entries every evening, but I keep finding myself falling asleep before I can complete them. So I just decided to stick them all together and create one massive "I really can't believe my life's been so great" posting:

It all started Friday morning. I was supposed to have an 8am French class, but thanks to my broken alarm clock, that was a no go. Instead, I spent the extra time primping and preparing for my upcoming story. My original plan for the week was to shoot a profile on the Big Gay Ice Cream franchise. They'd just left the food truck business behind for a stationary alternative, and I thought a Q-and-A with the owners might be fun. Originally, they said sure no problem, but after they found out I was going to be filming their store, I was turned away. Basically, it was Thursday night, and I was scrambling for a story. Thankfully, my professor emailed the class the AP daybook just as I was in the middle of my panic attack. I saw that he official opening of "Education Nation Experience" was to be held on Friday morning at Rockefeller Center. The tiny snippet describing the event promised children, so I figured closeups would be plentiful. Anyways, come Friday morning, I waltz over to where other cameras are set up. Mind you now, I'm definitely the only student there. Everyone else is national news (not even the local stations) and here I am with my baby canon camera. But, I set up my tripod and act like I belong. The real excitement though happened after the speeches were made, and the ribbon was cut...Ann Curry (the co-hot of The Today Show) was one of the speakers at the event. She gave a heartwarming talk about her father teaching elementary school, and she stressed the importance of every child having access to the internet regardless of their parent's pay check. All of it was quite sweet. So, I just sauntered over to the stage when everyone else was packing up and started asking her clarifying questions. Here I am, a 20 year old NYU student interviewing Ann Curry. I'm sure she was thinking "Who is this little twit?", but she answered all my questions and was very nice about it. Even after her personal assistant said it was time to go she made sure all my questions were answered. After that, I took the 6 train down to Grand Central Station where I filmed a sneak-peek of the World's Oyster Shucking Competition.

Saturday morning, I decided my footage from the 9th Annual Oyster Frenzy Preview turned out so good that I'd turn it into my story for the week. So again, I took the 6th train to Grand Central and set up shop. Twenty-eight competitors from across the globe came to Manhattan's Oyster Bar for a chance at the $3,000 prize. In two minutes, they had to shuck as many oysters as they possibly could. Following each round, top chefs held cooking demonstrations, and New York City's own Naked Cowboy would serenade the audience. But the professional shuckers weren't the only ones competing. Spectators raced to see who could eat 12 oysters the fastest. This years winner slurped down his dozen in less than 10 seconds.

With the smell of sea salt covering my clothes, I left the restaurant around 3:00pm and headed back to Lafayette for the day's top festivity...The Alabama vs. Arkansas Game. Because NYU's lacking in the football department, tailgating isn't really a Saturday tradition on our campus. But, with it being the first real SEC matchup for Alabama this season, I felt like it needed to be celebrated. Plus, one of my fellow Southern Laf RA's is a Razorback fan, so I wanted to be there to rub it in his face with they lost. For my game day cuisine, I paired a few of my mom's favorite recipes along with my own specialties. And if you ask me, I'd say we ate quite well: 100 pigs in a blanket, chocolate-chip dip, Roll Tide cupcakes, chicken wings and spinach artichoke dip. Adorned in my crimson and white U of A dress, I cheered for the elephants just as loud as if I were actually at the game. The game's final score stood at 38-14; it was a good day for any Alabama fan.

Just Some of Our Food

On Sunday morning, I had my first building wide event. For the Arts Collateral's September event, we planned a trip to the Guggenheim Museum. I'd never been there before, and I must admit I was rather impressed. Works by Picasso, Monet, and Cezanne hung on the walls, but it was the special exhibits that really caught my attention. The winner of the 2010 Hugo Boss Prize covered his entire space with 100,000 $1 bills. If you haven't seen it, please make a special trip!

Money, Money Money...Money!

Following my museum visit, I edited some video footage then made my way back to Lafayette for our third floor event. We've been feeling a little bad about all the junk food we'v been feeding our residents, so instead of your typical sweet, we made 100 smoothies. Of course they weren't all finished, so I probably drank 5 or 6 banana-strawberry soy smoothies while my Co-RA downed 10 whole milk variations.

For my first journalism assignment of the semester, my professor wanted us to visit a restaurant or cafe around campus and shoot 20-30 scenes that we think best represent it. After a quick Q-and-A amongst some of the Laf RAs, I decided upon Le Basket. Nestled on the corner of Broadway and Third, it seems like just your typical NYC deli, but customers say it's their outdoor seating and abundant Four Loko that keep them coming back. Despite looking like a complete creepster (you figured I had my camera, a tripod, a boom mike, huge headphones, and a ridiculously long extension cord), the owner graciously let me film inside the bodega-esque store Friday afternoon. The salad bar, the sandwich line, the coffee station, and the chip rack were among the still options I shoot. Interviews were a little hard to come by, but Marty McFresh's (yes that's his real name) was definitely usable. Sure, he may have been promoting Four Loko (not so much Le Basket), but every time I watch it I can't help but smile. Plus, since he actually spoke it complete sentences, it should be a super simple edit.

But, it was the footage I got Saturday night that showed what makes Le Basket a frequent hangout amongst NYUers. With Broadway as their backdrop, twenty somethings perched themselves around the outside metal tables. As night faded into morning, more 24oz. pop tabs were pulled, and more interviews were conducted. The general consensus revealed that Le Basket is a great place to hangout when you're broke.

I just showed my professor the material from my Le Basket adventure. After a quick tutorial in Final Cut, it looks like I'll be editing my raw footage to actually create a package. So, be sure to check back sometime next week for a finalized version.

First Floor Program

Last night the 11th Floor held our first floor event, Sunday Sundaes. And, I'm pretty excited to say 32 people showed up. Granted five were RAs, but that doesn't discredit the programs success. My CO-RA and I decided the only way to insure people would come was with free food, so we spend our Saturday afternoon making homemade (I guess it'd actually be dormmade) ice cream. To showcase my Southern roots, we of course followed the Paula Deen recipe I've become some familiar with. To represent Michael's home state of Minnesota, we made an "Ice Cream" playlist filled with popular songs from Midwestern bands.

Because our floor houses 69 residents, we had to make two batches of vanilla ice cream. My roommates didn't quite understand the noise coming from the ice cream maker; one just thought I'd left the blinder on for too long. But both agreed the annoying crunching of ice and rock salt was well worth the results.

To make our sundae party more authentic, we purchased hot fudge syrup, caramel sauce, strawberry drippings, whipped cream, and chocolate sprinkles. And for all our lactose intolerant/vegan visitors, Oreo cookies were available.

Our total cost for the program was $45. Not to shabby if you consider we had to buy eggs, sugar, milk, 4 cans of evaporated milk, 2 cans of sweetened condensed milk, vanilla extract, and 28 pounds of ice. We're thinking next week's event wont be quite has complicated; perhaps just a visit to Happy Dumplings will suffice.

Boring School Books for the Semester

My semester has officially begun. I've met my professors, spent too much money on books, used a whole packet of notecards, taken the NYU bus, and drunk a venti lattte from Starbucks. It's only been three days, and already I've been forced to conjugate verbs in French and read about London's medieval history. No longer are my sole responsibilities RA training and first floor event planning. Granted, that doesn't stop residents from knocking on my door at 2:30am to ask for a building sticker, but at least I've ventured above Canal Street.

Despite my daily 8ams (yes that's Monday-Friday), I'm pretty excited for my classes. However, it's a little weird to think that two years of my college days are already behind me. I'm no longer "new" to the city. This week, freshmen have actually asked me: really, how stressful is finals week? what's the best dining hall? where should I go to buy a fake?, etc. One gutsy freshmen even asked me for my number while we were waiting for our breakfast in the omelette line. When I explained to him that despite my blonde, curly hair and baby face, I'm actually 20. His response was, "So is that a yes or no?" Oh boys at NYU, they seriously think that because there's so few of them all girls will fall for the lame pickup lines; usually they're right, but come on, the omelette line.

However, it wasn't just Welcome Back Week for me. The little boy I babysit began the third grade yesterday. So, on Wednesday, as a last hurrah, we made a special trip to the NY Transit Museum. Highlights of our visit included a tour of vintage subway cars and sitting in the driver's seat of an MTA bus. For lunch, two slices of tomato pizza hit the spot; then, we were off to Barnes and Noble for an afternoon of picture books and Godiva hot chocolate.

Back With My Brooklyn Babies

For more than three months now, I've been without my Brooklyn Babies. Although they've sent me cute emails throughout the summer, nothing could top the warm hugs they gave me Wednesday morning. All last year, I spent three afternoons a week hanging out with Sophie (13) and Oliver (8) while their parents worked in the City. However, working for their family was definitely more than a job; it was more like having a second set of parents with an adorable little sister and brother---basically, it was just what I needed with my Georgia family living 1000 miles away.

With the kids not starting my back school until next week, I'd just assumed my first day back on the job would entail homework duty and tae know do lessons. But, I got an email from their mom wondering if I was available to work an extra morning this week. When I got to their adorable brownstone, Martha asked if I'd be up for an adventure. She said, "The day's just too pretty to be spent indoors." She suggested we spend the day in Manhattan.

After breakfast was served, facebook was checked, and teeth were brushed, Sophie and I came up with the game plan for the most perfect afternoon: We took the F train to Central Park, where we saw exotic animals in the zoo and rode the antique carousel.

We had a picnic lunch underneath a shaded tree, followed by cotton candy and strawberry ice cream for dessert. A game of pickup baseball was progressing, so Oliver took a swing while Sophie and I chatted about her upcoming last year in middle school. After we all agreed we couldn't explore one more inch of the massive park, we made our way to Dylan's Candy Bar. Sophie had an IOU from her parents for her birthday and decided to share her present with her baby brother. Neither one had ever been to the Wonka-esc Wonderland, and both just couldn't get over how many sweet treats for available for purchase. After exploring the three-story-confectionary-palace, Oliver decided on a giant Crunch bar, a water gun that shot bubble gum, and some candy shaped like Lego pieces, while Sophie settled for an assortment of chocolates, multiple Smarties, caramel chews and gummies. As we made our way back to Brooklyn, I just couldn't get over how much fun we'd had. More than that, I couldn't get over that I was actually getting paid to have all this fun! It really was a perfect way to ease back into the working world.

Natural Disasters and RA Training

This past week has definitely been a whirlwind of sorts. With countless training sessions and two natural disasters under my belt, I think it's safe to say I'll be prepared for whatever these students throw my way. I just hate that Mom and Mrs. Amy came all the way here and then had to leave less than 24 hours later.

After word surfaced that the NYC subways were closing, Chinatown became a ghost town. I looked outside my window Sunday morning, and no one was to be seen. We ventured out of Lafayette that afternoon looking for a bite to eat, and only a handful of restaurants were open.

But this week certainly hasn't been all work and no play. The NYU RAs took over the Harry Potter Exhibit in Time Square last Sunday. And, I've played more games of wiffle ball than I ever thought possible. Even staying up until 3am to fix bulletin boards and hang door decs was fun thanks to my 11th Floor Co-RA, Michael.

For over a week now, a building that's supposed to hold 1077 students has been the playground for just 32 RAs. Today's move-in day, and one of my suite mates has already moved in. It's time to officially get to work. I've already clocked-in my first hours in the Resource Center, and on Thursday I'll be having my first building wide program....Cupcake Baking at Butter Lane. So far, I'm pretty sure this job was made for me.

Just one last word word to the wise-Don't wear you're NYU ID around your neck. You'll look at your Welcome Week pictures a month from now and realize you shouldn't have worn the purple lanyard as a necklace for the entire week. Just because every Freshmen on campus is doing it doesn't mean you have to as well. I tell you this because I was one of those people who thought it'd be a good decision.

Getting All Settled In

After two days, nine states, and 1,000 miles, my dad and I finally saw the New York City skyline Friday afternoon. We made a quick stop at the card center to get a new NYU ID, then made our way to my new home for the next two years...Lafayette Residence Hall. Located in the heart of Chinatown, Lafayette’s surrounded by delicious restaurant and tons of culture. And my room, well I absolutely LOVE IT. I’ll have to share the kitchen with my suite mates, but after two years in cramped quarters, I’m excited to have my own bedroom and bath. I’m all settled in to my new home. The shelves have been lined, my bed’s been made, and all my clothes are in the closet. I’m pretty sure that with my return the amount of cupcakes, polkadots, and Vera Bradley have doubled in Manhattan. Here's a few pictures of my interior design skills:

Becky's Last Night in Georgia

All Becky's College Gear

It's sad to admit that my summer's coming to an end. Tomorrow, Becky leaves her tiny room where

she's lived for 18 years, and I make the trek to Manhattan on Thursday. Half our living room is covered with rubbermaid boxes filled with everything from clothes to cleaning supplies. So for our "Last Supper" as a full family until Thanksgiving, we had a special dinner. Tacos with all the fixings were the main entree, and for dessert, I baked delicious Jungle Fever cupcakes.

The nine hippos were my first treat tryouts of the day.

Ingredients-

9 funfetti cupcakes baked in blue paper liners
1/2 cup white sugar
1 can vanilla frosting
blue food coloring
9 peanut butter sandwich cookies (Nutter Butter)
9 chocolate-covered coffee beans
36 orange gourmet mints

1) Place the sugar in a small shallow bowl. Tint the sugar blue with food coloring.

2) Spoon 2 tablespoons of the vanilla frosting into a small ziplock bag, press out the excess air, seal, and set aside. Tint the remaining vanilla frosting blue with the food coloring. Spread the blue frosting on top of the cupcakes and smooth. Roll the edge of the cupcakes in the sugar--hold the bowl at an angle and gently roll the edge in the blue sugar.
3) For the hippo's head, press the cookie into the frosting of each cupcake, allowing 1/3 of the cookie to hang over the edge. Snip a small (1/8-inch) corner from the bag with the vanilla frosting. Pipe dots of the frosting onto the peanut butter cookie for the eyes, nostrils, and ears. Cut the chocolate-covered coffee beans in half using a sharp knife. Attach the chocolate-covered coffee beans, round side up, to the frosting to make the eyes and attach the gourmet mints to make the ears and nose.

The gators were a little harder to make, but for my University of Florida sister, it was a must.

Ingredients-

9 vanilla cupcakes baked in blue paper liners
1 can vanilla frosting
1/2 cup white sugar
9 peanut butter sandwich cookies (Nutter Butter)
9 green jordan almonds
9 chocolate-covered coffee beans

1) Spoon 1/2 cup of vanilla frosting into a ziplock bag, press out the excess air, seal, and set aside. If you still have blue tinted frosting from the hippo cupcakes, spread it on top of the cupcakes. Then tint the can of vanilla frosting green with the food coloring. If not, divide the frosting into 2 bowls; tint one bowl green and the other blue. Spread the blue on top of the cupcake.
2) You should still have blue tinted sugar remaining from your hippos cupcakes, so there's no reason to scoop out more. Simply roll the edge of the cupcakes in sugar.
3) For the croc heads, trim the edges of the cookies with a serrated knife to form a long V-shape. Ice the cookies with the green frosting. To make your gator shiny, add green food coloring drops to the blue sugar. Then press the frosted cookie into the green sugar, covering completely. Attach the sugared cookie to the frosted cupcakes, sugar side up, allowing 1/3 of the cookie to hang over the edge.
4) For the eyes, place the green jordan almond at the gator's crown. Cut the chocolate-covered coffee beans in half. Pipe 2 dots of vanilla frosting on the jordan almond and attach the chocolate-covered coffee beans. Pipe nostril holes at the base and teeth on the outer edges of the head, starting at the top edge of the cookie, with the remaining vanilla frosting.

Book Review: The Last Letter From Your Lover

The Last Letter From Your Lover by Jojo Moyes

I've constantly heard the expression "Never judge a book by its cover," but I've come to notice that I'm much more likely to pick up a book if its title is cliche and its cover art is picturesque. The Last Letter From Your Lover meets both these requirements, so I just assumed it would be a wonderful read. I was right.

In the prologue we find Elle Haworth, a 30-something journalist working for "The Nation," in 21st century Britain After 100 years in the same location, the newspaper is moving its headquarters. The Features Editor wants Ellie to write an article reflecting the sweeping changes of women's preoccupations since the 1960s.

While rummaging through the archives, Ellie stumbles upon a battered file that seems to be about lung disease, but just as she's about to toss it in the trash, a letter slips out dated the 4th of October 1960. It starts:

My dearest and only love,
I meant what I said. I have come to the conclusion that the only way forward is for one of us to take a bold decision …

And ends in:

… I’ll be on platform 4 at 7.15on Friday evening and there is nothing in the world that would make me happier than if you found the courage to come with me … Know that you hold my heart, my hopes, in your hands.

Then, leaving Ellie in the Archives, we're plunged into an entirely different story. It's October 1960. Jennifer Stirling wakes up in the hospital, she can remember nothing-not the tragic car accident that put her there, not her husband, not even who she is. While going through her house in an attempt to discover who she used to be, Jennifer stumbles upon an impassioned love letter, simply signed "B," asking her for forgiveness. After finding seven more messages, it becomes clear that Jennifer's having an affair on her coldhearted husband. But, who with?

In a nutshell, the book is a homage to the lost art of the love letter. It's a sophisticated, page-turning double love story spanning forty years, and I'd suggest it to any hopeless romantic. Bravo Jojo Moyes; Bravo!

There's a Mouse in the House

Joseph's Such a Proud Pet Papa

I think my mom has officially lost her mind...she's allowing my brother to keep a pet mouse. Last Thursday, my stepdad used his one-time-only-veto-privilege to overrule my mom's "No," so we have a new addition to our pet collection. Rolly, named after a pup from 101 Dalmatians, is white with black spots. Although he weighs less than 1/4 pound, just the sight of our tiny rodent makes my mom squeal. It's been mandated that Rolly mustn't leave Joseph's room. His cage, hamster wheel, chew stick, and food all live at the foot of Joseph's bed. And since Rolly's arrival, the time Joseph spends in his room has increased fifty fold. Every time I walk by his room, Joseph's sticking Rolly in his shirt pocket or telling him what a good boy he is. I've heard the expression "Nothing Comes Between a Boy and his Dog," but in Joseph's case I really think it should be changed to "Nothing Comes Between a Boy and his Mouse." Joseph prides himself on his fiscal responsibility; he rarely spends money except on his girlfriend, Rachel. All around, he's just a penny pincher. But already, he's spent more than $40 on Rolly. He claims the mouse is a "good investment;" I'm not quite sure if he's expecting a return on his purchase. But on more than one occasion, he's said, "this mouse is the best purchase I've ever made." To help ease his financial blow (you figure $40 is Joseph's allowance and lunch money for the week) but still keep Rolly happy, Joseph's build a maze for his mouse. He went through the attic and dug out his old lego table to construct a high tech play pen. Complete with multiple levels and many turns, the maze has become Rolly's new favorite play area, even over his hamster wheel. Of course that might have to do with the fact that every time he walks through it Joseph hands over a slice of cheese. At the rate he's eating, it's a good thing his name is Rolly. I'm just wondering how long it will take before the shiny-and-new feeling rubs off. However, a few friends have already visited and are begging their parents for mice of their own, so I'm thinking it will take quite a while.

Ever since Netflix made Made Men available on instant watch I've been sucked into the wonderful world of a 1960s housewife. I've always loved to iron and wear cardigan sweaters, but now I feel like my day's only complete if I have a homemade dessert accompanying my meals. Today I went a little overboard with my baking though. I started off with my typical Paula Deen Vanilla Ice Cream. Then, I decided that wouldn't be enough of a sugar rush, so I thumbed through my favorite new book, What's New Cupcake?, and found a perfect sweet treat...Rubber Ducky Cupcakes. They're perfect for a baby shower, a birthday party or even a crazy Easter bash. And, making that ducky shape is as easy as attaching a doughnut hole and a marshmallow to a cupcake.

What You'll Need:

18 Vanilla cupcakes baked in paper liners
2 cans (16 ounces each) vanilla frosting
Yellow Food Coloring
9 Jumbo Marshmallows
12 Plain Doughnut Holes
24 Swedish Fish
36 M&M's Minis

1) Tint 1 1/2 cans of the vanilla frosting bright yellow with the food coloring. Spoon the yellow frosting into a microwavable bowl. Spoon 1/4 cup of frosting into a zipclock bag, press out the excess air, seal and set aside.

2) Cut the marshmallows diagonally in half with a sharp knife of kitchen scissors Spread some of the remaining icing on top of the cupcakes. For the duck's head, place a doughnut hole on one side. For the tail, arrange the cut marshmallow, pointed end up, on the edge on the opposite side. Repeat to make 12 heads-up ducks. To make the bottoms-up ducks, place a cut marshmallow in the center of each of the remaining 6 cupcakes, pointed end up. Spread vanilla frosting up the side of the doughnut holes and marshmallows on the cupcake to fill in the gaps and smooth. Place the cupcakes in the freezer for 15 minutes.

3) Microwave the yellow frosting for 10 second intervals until it has the texture of lightly whipped cream. Remove one cupcake at a time from the freezer. Holding the cupcake by its paper bottom, dip it into the yellow frosting just up to the liner. Allow the excess frosting to drip off back into the bowl. Turn right side up and let stand. Repeat with the remaining cupcakes. If the frosting becomes too thick, reheat for several seconds, stirring well.

4) For the beaks, cut off the heads from the Swedish fish. Place two of the fruit chews on the front of the doughnut hole head, securing with frosting and pressing firmly. For the feet, cut off the tails from the Swedish fish. Inset the fishtails at the base of the duck on the bottoms-up cupcakes; place them design-side up to create a webbed effect. Snip a small corner of the bag with the vanilla frosting. Pipe a white dot on either side of the head for the eyes and add the mini brown candies.

With tomorrow marking my last day at NewsCentral, I'm glad I got to spend the morning shadowing Felicia. After a quick VO/SOT on Bibb County's first day, we made a trip to Byron, spotlighting a scrumptious barbecue joint for an upcoming segment of "The Chow Down."

Despite its name, Georgia Bob's BBQ offers a lot more than just pulled pork. Customers raved about their chicken salad and hearty sides. And, the owner, Bob Evans, gave us a perfect interview. Despite its driveway, he stressed the fact that Georgia Bob's isn't a fast food restaurant. They just serve high quality food a little quicker than the typical sit down spot. And if you're having an office luncheon or hosting a tailgate party, Georgia Bob's got you covered. One customer made a phone order asking for 100 BBQ sandwiches, and the staff completed her request without breaking a sweat.

problem offering a bite to questioning customers. After smelling the pit-smoked barbecue, there was no doubt as to what I'd be having. Yep, I broke my vegetarianism once again, but for their melt in your mouth meat, it was definitely worth it. Paired with crispy fries and 1/2 a Chocolate Delight, my lunch couldn't have been better. I also left with a doggy bag filled with a pound of chicken salad and a jar of roasted garlic pasta sauce.

Georgia Bob's combines great food with a friendly Southern atmosphere that makes you feel just like you're at home. I'd definitely suggest a stopover at one of their three locations (Macon, Byron and Warner Robins) if you're looking for a sizable spread that wont break the bank.

One Day at a Time by Danielle Steele

I'm a little embarrassed to admit that I've been sucked into the literary wows of Danielle Steel. Her romantic novels have been stuff of legend; I've seen numerous made-for-tv-movies adapted from her books on Lifetime, but I never though I'd actually read one of her formulaic, over-the-top novels. However, I've been sucked into her fantasy world, and I must admit I love the fluff.

Steel's 77th novel is a tale of three very different couples who learn to take life one day at a time. Coco Barrington was born into a legendary Hollywood family. Her mother Florence Flowers is a mega-bestselling author (I'm thinking Stell modeled this character after herself) who's just begun a secret romance with a man 24 years her junior. And, her sister Jane is one of Hollywood's top producers; she's lived with her partner, Liz, for almost 10 years, and the couple is expecting their first child. After dropping out of law school and leaving LA for the beach town of Bolinas, Coco was labeled the black sheep of the family. Despite her booming dog walking business, both her sister and mother think Coco's just a flakey hippy who never sees a project through. They don't think her career choice or the men she's dated have been worthy of the Barrington name. Both are waiting for Coco to grow up and go back to law school, but in the meantime, neither have any problem taking advantage of Coco's yes man mentality.

On her way to work one morning, Coco receives a frantic call from Jane, demanding that she housesits and looks after her dog while she and Liz are on location in New York for the next four months. Coco begrudgingly agrees. But, after living in her big sister's luxurious house for just a few days, Coco discovers just how quickly her world can be turned upside down. On a slightly random note, each time I think of the hot British actor, Leslie Baxter, Jude Law comes to mind. Although Law's only 38, I'm sure this Daddy to three has read bedtimes stories and sat through tea parties like his fictional counterpart.

I'd certainly recommend One Day at a Time to any gal who's never read a Danielle Steel novel; I've heard it's a nice way to ease into the melodramatic magic she creates. I think she's discovered the foolproof ingredients to literary sucess-love, sex, and puppy dog tails. And have no fear, her version of the Cinderella Story ends with a Happily Ever After too.

Oh the joys of being retired...after spending a few days with my grandmother, Ma, I've officially decided I can't wait to be 65. You get to spend your days indulging in fabulous activities like mahjong, golf, and watercolors. Plus, you can drive as slow as you want on the interstate and eat dinner at 4:30pm, and no one says a word to you because you're expected to do such things. After just a few hours in Ocala, Murder She Wrote became my "new" favorite show. Watching countless hours of the Angela Lansbury hit, along with Hart to Hart and Charlie's Angels, is how we'd spend the scorching afternoons. Oh '70s/'80s mystery series; can't get much better than that.

We also spent the five days searching for plate racks for my new collection and eating at delicious restaurants. Soup and salad was the selected theme for most of our dinners. We ate at both Crispers and Sweet Tomatoes-two dives specializing in meat free entrees. Along with Pasta Faire and a few home cooked meals, there's no denying we ate well.

However, there was one sight that took away my appetite. We spent yesterday morning lounging at the pool. After lathering up with my SPF 100 sunscreen, I found a perfect shaded spot and was enjoying my latest read when Ma told me to look up from my book. Gripping the pool handrails was an old man (at least 80) wearing a leopard print speedo. YUCK! The saddest part was he really thought he looked good. With his bald head and wrinkle infested leathery skin, he was really wowing the ladies; I'm just not so sure it was for the right reasons. After I'd had a few moments to quit my gagging, one noodle-loving lady sauntered out of the Grim Reaper Pool bikini clad. I'm sorry but after you reach a certain age, like 30, it's time to retire your two pieces for a more modest approach.

Besides the shocking swimsuits, I really do feel like living in an active seniors community will be awesome. I'll join a book club, have long lunches with gal pals, dress my teacup poodle in ridiculous outfits, watch murder mysteries from the 2030s (that'll be the Murder She Wrote era for me), and eat copious amounts of strawberry ice cream. If only there was a way to go from college to retirement. Oh well I guess I'll just have to start my countdown to 2056 now.

As I'm sure you can tell by now, I'm such a sucker for any book set in London. Of course, my latest listen is no different. The first book in the Reid Family series, this historical romance begins when Duncan MacTarvish, a dashing highlander, discovers he's the sole heir of an English marquis. He's required to leave the land he loves, move to England, and assume the title and estate from his grandfather, who he's never met. As any true Scotsman would, Duncan wears a kilt to meet his betrothed bride, Ophelia. In response to his appearance, this beautiful viper-tongue calls her groom-to-be a "Scottish barbarian." Clearly offended, Duncan calls off the engagment and is forced to search for a new spouse. He's entranced by his beautiful neighbor, Sabrina, but duty, class stance, and a secret that dwells in the woman's past forbids the desired union---unless true love can somehow find its way.

This super short love affair is just perfect if you're searching for a full blown happy ending in less than 3 hours. It's not you're typical lusty, shirtless man on the cover kind of paperback though. Sure, it's no piece of highbrow literature, but sometimes you just want a simple plot that doesn't force you to think. I'd definitely suggest it to anyone who's in need of a little added passion.
